Young Guardians

community safety initiatives led by young people
Organised by:
Regent's Park

Young Guardians comes under our Community Champions umbrella - creating initatives and prototypes for community safety led by local young people.

So far -

- A group of young people were trained in contextual safeguarding and developed a workshop related to community safety, youth exploitation and young women's safety. They created two films, one of which won the Camden Youth Safety Awards! They also created a film to show their process. The group led workshops to groups of young people and presented at the Champions 'Safety Social.'

- The group organised the first Regent's Park Estate Community Festival in Cumberland Market, Clarence Gardens and outside Old Diorama Arts Centre on Drummond Street and it was a great success! Head to our previous events to check it out

- The team organised Illumination Market in Nov 2022, to bring people together as the cost of living started to hit and to have a positive activity in Clarence Gardens

- In december 2022, the young people collaborated with the Community Champions and held 6 days of Community Kitchen, to try to bring some joy, free hot meals and a place to have free entertainment in a warm space over the december holiday. This then continued to be delivered weekly between February and July 2023, and will hopefully return in September 2023! The group were awarded the Youth Service Award at the Camden Youth Awards for volunteering and leading through their holiday.

-The team got an increased level of contextual safeguarding training, public speaking and were trained by Street Doctors in emergency first aid when someone is bleeding or are injured by a weapon - they have designed their own resources and films to help other young people and community members understand what to do in moments of conflict or if someone is injured! The group have developed a training for local shop keepers, services and organisations using bystander intervention techniques and 'in case of emergency' what to do and who to call for key community safety issues they and other residents have told us about.

-They have also learnt some brilliant photography techniques with photographer Louie Stewart, using analogue cameras and these photos have been used in their resources - Head to www.fya.org.uk/safety/ to see!
